Sløvåg Quarry: From Traditional Operation to Cutting-Edge Autonomy

The Sløvåg (Halsvik) Quarry has a long-standing history of supplying high-quality aggregates to European construction and offshore industries. Now under the Wergeland Group, the site has transformed into a state-of-the-art operation, leading advancements in autonomous quarrying while preserving its industrial heritage. Romarheim has taken over transportation operations for Wergeland, with Steer Autonomous providing the innovative technology that makes this possible, ensuring seamless and efficient operations across the quarry.

Autonomy at the Core of Operations

Sløvåg Quarry is divided into fully autonomous and manual zones, allowing for optimized workflows across its facilities. The site’s fleet includes autonomous trucks and manually driven loaders that work in coordination to support operations:

  • Caterpillar 772G and 775G Trucks: Dedicated to transporting material to the crusher
  • Volvo 950 Excavator: Manually operated and serving as the site’s operation centre. Spotting, Dispatching and Supervising all autonomous trucks.
  • Crusher integration - enabling trucks to dump only when a green light is given
  • SteerLink - GNSS based Collision Avoidance System (CAS) bringing all other vehicles and machines online. This enables some manual traffic in the autonomous zone.
