In a recent project in Sweden, Steer partnered with Scandinavian Pile Driving (SPD) to deliver an innovative remote-controlled piling solution to Norwegian contractor Moss Entreprenør. The project utilized a CAT 317 GC excavator equipped with an SPD1500 hammer and advanced CANBUS-based control, featuring components from industry-leading suppliers such as Deutsch and Danfoss.
The SPD1500 hammer, delivered by SPD, is renowned for its powerful impact force and environmentally friendly design. It uses a nitrogen accumulator to reduce hydraulic pressure spikes, which protects the system and ensures smoother operation. SPD, a Swedish manufacturer and part of the ABI Group, specializes in foundation equipment and focuses on developing smart, operator-friendly solutions
The CAT 317 GC is a 17-ton excavator designed for lower operating costs and simplified maintenance. It features a Cat C3.6 engine producing 119 hp and offers two work modes—ECO and Smart—allowing the operator to adapt performance to specific tasks while reducing fuel consumption. Compared to the standard CAT 317 model, which offers more power and built-in tech features, the GC version is a more economical choice for projects with moderate performance requirements
The machine was controlled remotely using a CANBUS system integrating components from trusted suppliers such as Deutsch and Danfoss. Remote control of construction equipment offers several key advantages:
Improved Safety: Operators can work from a safe distance, minimizing the risk of injury in hazardous environments.
Better Ergonomics: Remote operation reduces physical strain on the operator, leading to less fatigue and more consistent performance.
Enhanced Oversight and Control: With remote access, operators and supervisors gain a clearer overview of operations, enabling more precise and consistent execution of tasks.
