Steer has over 10 years of experience with building and operating remote controlled construction equipment. This has given us an invaluable insight into which technologies work, and which doesn’t - both in terms of hardware and software.

In 2021 we plan to release the Steer Semi-Autonomous product to the public.

Steer Remote

Steer Remote was first released to the public in 2019. This turnkey product enables any piece of heavy equipment to be operated remotely. The Steer remote product is usually used in hazardous working environments like; explosives, radioactivity, avalanches, mudslides, etc. Operators can be located thousands of kilometers away from the machines they are running.

The standard Steer Remote solution consist of:

  • Operator chair with joysticks and typically two or three control panels (touch screens):

    • Steer monitor: Operator is able to configure the Steer Remote system, machine ignition, handbrake, rpm etc.

    • Manufacturer monitor: This is the monitor from the cabin of the machine. This is typically used to turn on lights, activate GradeAssist, display fuel level, warning/error messages from the machine etc.

    • Machine control monitor: For machine control and GPS Support. (Leica, Topcon, Trimble etc.)

  • One large 4k UHD monitor showing low-latency (optimized) video streams from the machine

  • Wireless network infrastructure

  • Various Steer components installed in the machine to enable remote control. Machines that do not have electronically controlled valves will need to have the hydraulic system modified. It is preferred to use brand new construction equipment with electronically controlled valves when using Steer products.

  • Installation, testing, training of operators, documentation and support.

Steer Semi-Autonomous

Steer believes fully autonomous construction equipment through other manufacturers will be offered to the public in 5+ years. This in spite of the efforts through big companies such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi and others are making in the field.

Our approach to autonomous construction equipment is to start simple and build the system gradually more complex. Working this way, we have full control and can progressively improve upon the system. Our trusted partner Gjermundshaug, use the products Steer build. This gives us invaluable experience and insight into the area.

In 2010 we worked on two Caterpillar 730 articulated dump trucks and fitted them with a semi-autonomous remote-control system. The dump trucks were manually loaded by a remote-controlled excavator, then drove approx. 7 kilometers on their own using high precision GPS before an operator manually took over and dumped the load. Over 30.000 cubic meters of dirt containing explosives were transported this way 24/7 for 3 months. It turned out the semi-autonomous dump trucks far outperformed a human operator (via remote control) when driving the 7 kilometers.

In 2021 we plan to release the Steer Semi-Autonomous product to the public. The system will build upon the Steer Remote Control product - while adding hardware components such as GPS, Radar and Lidar in order to have proper obstacle detection. The system can be used in closed areas such as open pit mines, military cleanup operations and large construction sites.

Steer Software

We develop 100% of the software ourselves, making the products extremely robust, powerful, user friendly and flexible. Up until a few years ago we used commercially available software, but this was never a perfect match for our needs. Therefore, we took full control of the technology stack ourselves - allowing us to build a superior product ready for Cloud and Autonomous operations. We can integrate pretty much anything into our Steer Remote Control product, e.g. third-party products from Trimble, Leica and Topcon.

Some of the building blocks we use today are Linux, C/C++, GPU accelerated code, CAN-BUS and Broadr-reach. The Steer software stack is quick, solid and built from scratch to perform in 24/7/365 operations.

Steer Hardware

We develop and build most hardware components ourselves. We do this to have hardware able to keep up with our software in a robust and efficient way. All components are IP65 (linke) or better - and is rigorously tested before being used in production.

It is important to mention that we support almost any joystick, pedal etc. in our remote-control product. Danfoss, Svab and MCS are some of the vendors we have used so far in our operator chair.

Steer Cloud

All major components of the Steer Remote Control product is connected via Steer Cloud - making it very easy to support operators, make configuration changes, upgrade software/firmware etc.

We have also added support to operate machines via Steer Cloud. This means you can be located anywhere in the world and operate machines. Our record distance so far is 600 kilometers between operator and machine!

Steer Build History

Caterpillar Excavators

We have successfully fitted our remote-control system to a wide range of Caterpillar excavators.

Articulated Dump Truck

Two Caterpillar 730 articulated dump trucks were fitted with our remote-control system in 2010.

Caterpillar D6T Dozer

In 2018 we fitted a Caterpillar D6T with the Steer remote-control system.

John Deere Tractor

The tractor was used to crush roads for the Norwegian Armed Forces.

Volvo Dumper

A dumper with Steer remote control system was used for removing explosives.
